There is a stone staircase leading to the Buddhist sanctum, and the faint sound of climbers moving up the stairs reverberates with the sound of spring waves. The crest of Mount Hua is covered in mist for the first time, and flowers bloom on its cactuses, also known as senshō, or “hermit’s palm.” We who have come to view the ume blossoms spend some time here, and while the grounds of Seikenji, surrounded by mountains, are narrow, they open out beautifully, and on a clear day, you can gaze upon the broad sky. Hearing the reed pipe flute, I can hardly wait for the time of year when the cranes dance; the will of our king is infinite.
